If you are still using Windows 10 you’re not alone. The latest stats show just under 70% of global Windows PC users are on the software despite the existence of Windows 11. This is because many computers can’t upgrade to the newer version, but Microsoft is set to stop supporting Windows 10 in 2025.
That’s why a new online petition has been launched calling for Microsoft to extend its support of Windows 10 and provide security updates beyond 2025. The petition has been set up by the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), a US and Canadian group of nonprofit organisations, which argues that Microsoft ending Windows 10 support will massively contribute to avoidable e-waste.
“Microsoft’s decision to end support for Windows 10 could cause the single biggest jump in junked computers ever, and make it impossible for Microsoft to hit their sustainability goals,” the PIRG said, addressing Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. “The new version of their operating system’s stringent hardware requirements could result in 40% of PCs in use being left behind.”
If you want to add your name to the petition you can do so here.
Microsoft launched Windows 11 in 2021 and offers it as a free upgrade to anyone in the world on Windows 10 – as long as your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements for things like processor, memory, and storage.

If your PC can’t upgrade you miss out on new features, but your machine will still function perfectly fine because Microsoft still provides Windows 10 with security updates that keeps malicious software and crafty hackers at bay.
As it stands, that security support will end after the final monthly update in October 2025 – forcing Windows 10 users to either accept they have a computer vulnerable to attacks, or fork out cash for a new Windows 11 computer.
“Microsoft’s decision to stop supporting millions of functional computers in our hospitals, businesses, and homes is a raw deal for customers who expect their expensive devices to last,” said the PIRG.
