Anton du Beke apologises for being brutal to former dance partner

Anton du Beke shares he was stabbed by his father

Anton du Beke rose to fame after signing up for Strictly Come Dancing as a professional back in 2004 before becoming a judge in recent years, but the star rarely speaks about his personal life.

However, he reflected on his past during Wednesday’s episode of Kate Garraway’s Life Stories where he apologised for being “brutal” to his former dance partner Erin Boag.

Erin, now 48, is a dancer from New Zealand who had moved to London where “the heart of it was”.

Erin and Anton’s chemistry was undeniable, but Erin admitted she would train “every single day as there was not a Christmas or birthday off”.

The pair turned professional by 2002 and Strictly Come Dancing came calling two years later.

Reflecting on his behaviour on the dancefloor with Erin, he confessed: “I was a lunatic, I apologise to Erin, I was brutal to her really.

“Poor old Erin, she’s there and I am sorry, I didn’t mean all that stuff. You’re great.”

Anton said he “couldn’t get any lower in the competition world” when he started out and he noticed how his competitors had “more money and nicer suits”.

He shared: “If I knew nothing else I knew one thing, I was going to beat you. You, I am going to beat at one stage. Because what else was there in life? I had nothing else.”

Erin did the first 10 series of Strictly Come Dancing and Anton has taken part in all of them to date.

“I am never going to leave, ever,” he said as the audience burst into applause on the ITV programme.

Despite being on Strictly Come Dancing since the show’s inception, Anton has never taken home the Glitterball Trophy with a celebrity partner.

The best he achieved was third place with Lesley Garrett in the very first series of the BBC One show.

Opening up about his Strictly experience, he said: “I realised when we started Strictly Come Dancing two things.

“One this isn’t about me and two, I’m going to have to just be myself because we had the microphone and cameras there the whole time.”

“That was always how it was for, I never minded who I got.”

Kate Garraway’s Life Stories with Anton du Beke is available to watch on ITVX.
