The BBC addressed Freddie Flintoff's car accident as Top Gear was pushed back by 20 minutes thanks to the World Cup final.
The show had been due to start at 8pm, but the World Cup final saw a nail-biting battle between Argentina and France go to penalties, ending in a narrow Argentina victory.
Addressing the unusual circumstances, the channel's programme announcer told viewers: "First on BBC One, later than billed and filmed before Freddie's recent accident, time for new Top Gear and we really should tell the guys about Argentina."
Flintoff was rushed to hospital on Tuesday after getting caught in an accident whilst filming Top Gear at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome.
His son Corey, 16, said: "I’m not too sure what happened but he is lucky to be alive.
"It was a pretty nasty crash. It is shocking. We are all shocked but just hope he's going to be OK."
A BBC spokesperson said at the time: "Freddie was injured in an accident at the Top Gear test track this morning – with crew medics attending the scene immediately.
"He has been taken to hospital for further treatment and we will confirm more details in due course."
