BBC Breakfast turned rather awkward this morning as Jon Kay clapped back at his co-presenter Sally Nugent amid a row about mascara.

The presenters were chatting to Junior MasterChef 2023 champion Keziah Whittaker on Tuesday (January 24) about her recent victory in the BBC cooking competition when things turned frosty in the studio.

Keziah admitted she never expected to be crowned winner of the show, and was ready to hug her competitors if they won instead.

"I wasn't prepared for that scenario at all," she explained.

Pointing to her trophy sitting proudly on the desk between them, presenter Jon reassured her: "Well there's the proof, in front of you! You've got the trophy, that wonderful trophy. Congratulations! It's great to see that smile."

Jon then went on: "And you talked about, you've got special anti, erm, what's it called? Mascara that doesn't run?"

"Waterproof!" both Keziah and Sally chimed in to correct him, as Jon went red in the face.

In a chilly exchange, Sally confronted him: "Is that not what you're wearing?" while Jon hit back: "No it's not! Or, I don't know?"

Turning back to their guest, he went on: "But it paid off, right?"

"Definitely, because the tears just didn't stop," Keziah explained. "Every time I look at that video it's like I'm reliving the moment all over again. I get so emotional."

Elsewhere on the show, viewers were fuming their "lives have been ruined" as Breakfast aired spoilers from the last episode of hit drama Happy Valley.

Despite issuing a warning for those who haven't seen the episodes, Jon and Sally still came under fire for the segment on social media.

One Twitter user said: "@BBCBreakfast you have just ruined my day telling me that there are only two episodes of @happyvalleybbc left!"

"#BBCBreakfast warned people who hadn't seen Happy Valley on the iPlayer to look away now with a spoiler alert. Later on they showed the same footage anyway with a 'coming up' feature!" someone else fumed.

A third fan ranted: "Not BBC Breakfast spoiling Happy Valley for thousands this morning. If I'd not seen that last night I would have been ANGRY."

While another penned: "Bloody hell, the BBC coverage of Happy Valley is riddled with spoilers and I haven’t watched it yet. Sigh."
