BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty ‘refuses to be ashamed’ over admission

Naga Munchetty breaks down after George Alagiah death

Naga Munchetty admitted she “refuses to be ashamed” as she made an admission to her BBC Five Live listeners.

The BBC Breakfast presenter opened up about how she is able to “sleep anywhere,” and went on to add she’d fallen asleep in the cinema recently while watching the Barbie movie – but had no regrets.

“I’m not somebody who can be relied upon to stay awake all the time,” she admitted to her radio fans.

Continuing, she added: “I went to the cinema to see the new Barbie film. I had a 20-minute nap. I still know what the film was all about.”

She later added: “I just think if it’s after work and you are in a warm, dark room, what do you expect?”

She went on to call the unique skill of being able to catch 40 winks anywhere her “superpower.”

“I can curl up and sleep any time, anywhere – but I don’t necessarily think I should be doing it when I have company or in company.”

The presenter proceeded to list off places she has enjoyed a cat nap, which included gigs and rugby matches.

Naga added she “refuses to be ashamed of taking a well-earned rest in public, concluding: “I don’t see falling asleep in public as a problem.”

Naga is up at the crack of dawn for her shifts on BBC Breakfast, which officially begin at 6am from the BBC studio, which probably explains why she needs the extra naps.

From Thursdays to Saturdays, the journalist presents the morning programme alongside a co-host, usually Charlie Stayt.

Naga has faced a tough week, with the news of her BBC colleague Geroge Alagiah’s death hitting her and other journalists from the broadcaster hard.

The host broke down during Monday’s instalment of her Five Live radio show as she announced the sad news.

She told listeners: “We’ve had the very sad news that our colleague George Alagiah, BBC presenter – you all know him – who has been living with bowel cancer since 2014 – he has since stepped back from presenting BBC News.

“We’ve just heard the news he has died. We’ve just heard that from his agent.”

Sounding choked up, she added: “Apologies for the emotion in my voice – he was so loved in our newsroom.

“We’ve had that news, we’ll bring you more a little bit later, Rebecca apologies for the interruption, you have the rest of the sport.”

Naga Munchetty’s BBC Radio 5 Live show airs Mondays to Wednesdays at 11am, while BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
