Tom Stevenson looked well on his way to becoming an Octo-champ before heading into Thursday’s episode of Countdown, impressing the likes of Colin Murray, Susie Dent and Rachel Riley with his previous performances on the Channel 4 show. However, none of them could have imagined Tom would see off competitor Laureen Bowley in such a fashion that would bag him the record of the highest-ever points scored on the show.

In a performance which saw him bag three nine-letter words, Tom headed into the conundrum with an already impressive 144 points.

However, before he and Laureen could tackle the final brainteaser, Colin pointed out the current record for the highest-ever score stood at 152 points.

With 10 points up for grabs in the conundrum, Colin said to Tom: “Tom Stevenson, you are one buzz away from history, you’d beat that by two points.

“Are you happy I’ve told you that before the conundrum or a little shocked?”

“Yeah a little shocked, but we’ll just wait and see, see what happens,” the rather calm Tom replied.

And Colin commented on this by adding: “You’ve got a wonderful, happy-go-lucky demeanour, very calm, so whatever happens, happens.

“So let’s get your finger on that buzzer. Are we about to witness the highest-ever score in the history of the greatest game show ever to grace our TV screens?

“Let’s reveal today’s possibly historic Countdown Conundrum,” Colin said as the tiles rolled and the clock began to tick away.

And it only took Tom a few seconds to smash his buzzer and tell Colin: “Volunteer.”

“Let’s have a look!” Colin shouted as the tiles rolled around to reveal Tom had done it.

“Yes!” Colin yelled as the audience erupted into applause. “We just witnessed history. 154, the highest Countdown score ever!”

Susie and Rachel could also be seen clapping Tom’s record-breaking feat as he threw himself back in his chair in relief.
