The BBC soap aired a double bill on Thursday as Sonia Fowler (played by Natalie Cassidy) learnt of the passing of Dot Cotton (June Brown). The icon died earlier this year and EastEnders will be pay a special tribute to the stalwart’s character with a fitting send-off later this month. In Thursday’s episode, viewers were left in tears by a touching change to the end credits.

The episode began with Sonia receiving a call from Dot but she was cut off when her phone died.

Throughout the episode, viewers watched as Sonia’s phone continued to ring after being left in the house charging.

Eventually, Sonia returned Dot’s call while Dotty Cotton (Milly Zero) and Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) argued next to her.

After hearing the news of Dot’s death, Sonia, Dotty and Kathy went over to the Queen Vic where the nurse told the Walford residents what had happened.

Sonia walked into Dot’s infamous sitting room and simply said: “Goodnight, Dot.”

The credits rolled in silence with the iconic EastEnders music missing in tribute to June.
