Emmerdale fans hit back at storyline as Sam Dingle arrested amidst ongoing poverty woes

Emmerdale fans didn’t hold back their ire on Thursday night, when soap favourite Sam Dingle was caught red handed shoplifting nappies from the corner shop.

The hapless granddad had been hoping to help out Amelia, the mother of his grandchild after her father Dan Spencer had urged the family to contribute more to the little one’s upkeep.

Yet rather than following a more conventional approach, Sam felt the only way he could help was to steal nappies for the baby, amid the Dingle’s own ongoing money woes, in which they didn’t have the spare cash to purchase the essential item.

To make matters worse, Sam was caught in the act by shop owner Eric Pollard, who quickly chased after him, only to be pushed to the ground and hit hid head, something that would later come back to bite Sam immensely.

In shocking scenes (and urged to by his son David Metcalfe) Eric proceeded to press charges for the crime, leading to Sam being arrested and potentially facing prison time for his previous criminal record.

As soon as the scenes aired, fans raced to social media to share their thoughts, with many calling out the soap for the storyline, despite it being a reality faced by many amid the cost of living crisis.

“ Sam is out of order stealing from a neighbour and a friend if he cut out his butties from the cafe he could buy a pack of nappies,” wrote one fan on social media.

“Can someone explain why the Dingles can’t afford to live? They all working and all get the government hand outs and Vinny is loaded. Come on writers try and make it realistic,” commented another.

Before a third fan added: “This poverty plea would be much more believable if they didn’t have what seems like every meal and every drink, every day, in either the cafe or the Hide. If you were struggling for money wouldn’t you shop cheaply and eat at home like the rest of the nation?”

Not everyone was quite so unimpressed however, with several praising the soap for highlight a very real problem with increasing costs.

“Oh, Sam, what have you done? Eric is still human. You could have just asked if you were struggling,” lamented one fan.

While a second added: “Shoplifting is not the answer, but it’s good of a soap to recognise that it’s a potential reality some families have to consider every day just to access the essentials.”

While Sam be heading to prison after all? Or can Eric be convinced to drop the charges?

Emmerdale continues on ITV weeknights at 7:30pm.
