GMB presenters branded out of their depth as fans blast poor interview

Good Morning Britain: Matthew Hedges says he wasn’t ‘poking around’

Good Morning Britain presenters Ranvir Singh and Ed Balls have come under fire for their “poor” interview with Matthew Hedges who was sentenced to life in prison on spying charges.

The interview turned awkward when Ranvir asked why Matthew was “poking around” with UAE laws, and he sharply corrected her to confirm he was not doing so.

ITV viewers flocked to Twitter to comment on the interview, with @FlopsyPickle writing: “Yet another poor interview by Ranvir and Ed, it’s cringeworthy #gmb.”

Hasamelis penned: “Gosh when faced with intelligent people these presenters are shown up massively #gmb.”

Scott added: “Ed and Ranvir always seem out of depth in these interviews. #GMB.”

Heather Hynd said: “Matt looks like he’s had enough of the stupidity of the questions and comments and I don’t blame him! What cringe #gmb.”

Other viewers were more focused on the guest’s responses, with Jamie asking: “Why did the UAE authorities feel the need to hack his phone before he left the UK? I don’t think the UAE would go to these lengths for an innocent British student…#GMB.”

@AvengedAngel4 penned: “Why anyone would want to go to the UAE is beyond me. One of the worst human rights records in a ‘developed’ nation… Ranked 153 worldwide in terms of personal freedom… #GMB.” (sic)

Matthew was held in isolation for almost seven months, his wife Daniela Tejada explained to Ed and Ranvir, and she campaigned tirelessly for his release.

Matthew said he was tortured in the UAE after being wrongly convicted on spying charges in 2018, and claimed the Foreign Office has failed him.

He claimed: “The concept of why we are truly fighting is because it could happen to anyone and as we have seen the Foreign Office is extremely reluctant to do anything about it.

“What is nearly an insult to me is when I see British MPs currently who are welcoming with open arms, Emirates into parliament.”

Ed asked if Matthew would tell students not to go to the UAE, but he replied: “No, it’s not for me to tell them what to do and what not to do, but for them to do the research and make sure they understand that the situation is far more complex than the branding the country says.”

Ranvir said the UAE insisted Matthew “did get proper care” and was “never threatened or subjected to torture”.

She also said the Foreign Office will review the findings in due course, adding: “I hope you are well now and I hope you can heal now from your ordeal.”

Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays between 6am and 9am on ITV and ITVX.
