He was opposed to the idea of sending his son to live with Myra McQueen in Alicante.

He tried to reason with Sally St Claire (Annie Wallace), who was adamant the kid should stay away from his dad after he relapsed and started drinking again.

John Paul promised to go to rehab but Sally feared he could go back to the bottle at any moment.

In emotional scenes, John Paul gave Matthew-Jesus a Spanish dictionary, telling him he was going to need it as he was moving there.

He wrote: "Appreciation post! Thats a wrap on #matthewjesusmcqueen .

"Thanks to everyone at @hollyoaksofficial crew/cast, @peterhuntcasting and Gill for the opportunity to play MJ! @theanniewallace we'll miss you.

"Lastly to my favourite on screen dad @thejamesutton thanks for always making work fun! It's been an amazing three years, take care."

Unsurprisingly, Matthew's post was flooded with messages from shock fans who were unaware the soap star was leaving the show.

One fan penned: "Aww, not temporary then. You were great, take care!"

Another added: "You’ve been amazing playing Matthew Jesus. Good luck for whatever the future holds."

A third person said: "Good luck for the future Matthew"

While a fourth social media user said: "Well done Matthew, looking forward to your future work x"

Before leaving the village, Matthew-Jesus said his goodbyes, promising to video call every day.

"You're growing into an amazing young man. I'm so sorry that I'm not going to be here for all of it," John Paul said.

"I know you're going to get better, so I'll be home before you know it," Matthew-Jesus reassured his dad and gave him a present to open when he'd really miss him.

"I promise," John Paul said as his child entered the cab to the airport with Sally.

Returning from the airport, Sally staged an intervention, urging the family to stay strong and team up in the face of difficulties.

Hollyoaks streams first on All 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4
