The Handmaid’s Tale is returning for the highly anticipated fifth series which was first given the go-ahead in December 2020, months before season four’s start date. The Hulu and Channel 4 dystopian series took an unexpected turn at the end of the fourth outing as June (played by Elisabeth Moss) took action into her own hands. When The Handmaid’s Tale returns, fans will see the dreaded aftermath unfold, leaving June questioning what she is to do next.

How many episodes are in The Handmaid’s Tale season 5?

The Handmaid’s Tale will be returning for season five on Wednesday, September 14, on the American streaming service Hulu.

Up until now, there has been no fixed pattern when it comes to the drama’s number of episodes per series.

Seasons one and four had 10 episodes each, whereas outings two and three were made up of 13.

Series five is going to follow in the footsteps of the latest season and consist of 10 episodes.

While many viewers love to binge-watch their favourite shows, this has never been the case for The Handmaid’s Tale.

Hulu has always released new episodes weekly and series five will be no different.

Subscribers will, however, be treated to episodes one and two on September 14 with one new instalment coming out every Wednesday from then on.

As long as there are no changes to the schedule, the series five finale of The Handmaid’s Tale will be out on Wednesday, November 9.

From this date, subscribers will be able to binge-watch the entire five seasons of the drama whenever they choose.

Sadly, UK fans are going to have to wait a bit longer as there has been no word so far of a UK release date.

Last year, series four debuted on Channel 4 two months after the initial American start date.

If this is to happen again, then UK viewers could expect to see The Handmaid’s Tale return sometime before the end of the year.

To get fans excited about what’s to come, Hulu has released a teaser synopsis for what they can expect this time around.

The description reads: “June faces consequences for killing Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose.

“The widowed Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada.

“Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) works with Nick (Max Minghella) and Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power.

“June, Luke, (O-T Fagbenle) and Moira (Samira Wiley) fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah.”

Thankfully, it is already known that this won’t be the end of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Hulu has already renewed the drama for a sixth series but sadly, this will be the last ever season.

Much like series four and five, it will also consist of 10 episodes.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 premieres on Wednesday, September 14, on Hulu in the USA. A UK release date hasn’t been announced.
