Hulu’s dystopian series, The Handmaid’s Tale, is fast approaching its season five finale. As viewers continue to be gripped by the tense drama, Serena Joy star Yvonne opened up about the dreaded finale.

The Handmaid’s Tale’s fifth season has taken a major turn for one of its key villains Serena Joy Waterford.

Since June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) was placed in her home as a handmaid, fans have been vying for her to suffer brutal revenge.

As one of the main establishers of Gilead, Serena was responsible for the harsh abuse the working women in the totalitarian society faced.

However, after June was able to escape and find freedom in season four, the tables turned for Serena who was recently seen begging for her help.

Although fans were pleased to see Serena finally get a taste of her own medicine, many began to feel sympathy for her, after it appeared as though she was now a handmaid.

After escaping with her one-month-old baby, many were left wondering what the finale could hold for the desperate mother.

Thankfully for fans, Serena star Yvonne refused to “ruin’ the final episode and teased a big twist is on the way.

During her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the actress teased: “All I will say is that, whatever people are expecting to happen, it’s not the thing that’s going to happen.”

Things took a huge turn for Serena after June killed her husband Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) in the season four finale.

After June fired a gunshot outside the Gilead Information Center where the then-pregnant Serena was working, she was rushed to the safety of the Wheelers.

As Gilead sympathisers, Ryan Wheeler (Lucas Neff) and his wife Alanis Wheeler (Genevieve Angelson) took Serena in and were able to provide care and security.

However, things soon took a dark turn, when Alanis became overbearing about Serena’s prenatal health and the baby, and eventually sent her to her room in a furious rage.

This was when Serena realised she was being treated as a handmaid, and her child could be taken from her and placed in the Wheeler’s home.

After learning June had been apprehended, Serena insisted on accompanying her security Ezra Shaw (Rossif Sutherland) to confront her and pull the trigger.

However, while the gun was pointed at June, she had a shocking change of mind and shot at Ezra, forcing June to drive while her labour pain kicked in.

After much back and forth, June helped Serena give birth before driving her to a hospital.

During the recent episode, Serena was apprehended for violating the terms of her stay in Canada and was told her newborn son, Noah, would go into care.

One month later, viewers learned Serena had requested the Wheelers to foster Noah while she was in a detention centre.

She was eventually granted the right to live with them to nurse the baby, as he wouldn’t take bottles.

When they all visited the Gilead centre, Serena found the opportunity to flee, with her newborn in hand.

Fans will have to stay tuned to see if she will get away or face the same serious consequences June faced.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 concludes Wednesday, November 8 on Hulu in the USA and is available on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
