Waterloo Road return date revealed – and its sooner than you think

Waterloo Road has posted something that will gladden the hearts of everyone who is eagerly awaiting the brand new series.

The show’s official Instagram account has shared a clip featuring the iconic theme tune over a blurred-out video of pupils going into the school – some apparently wearing the old Waterloo Road uniform of maroon tops. A Waterloo Road graphic overlays this and it’s different to the one we’re used to.

‘A brand new logo for a brand new #WaterlooRoad. Coming to @BBC One and @BBCiPlayer in early 2023 🤩’ the caption reads, with star Angela Griffin responding with ‘👏👏👏👏👏👏’

The post has already had thousands of likes, as lots of people are apparently as excited about the new series as we are.

Viewers of Saturday night’s Strictly Come Dancing got a glimpse of the new Waterloo Road set as star Kym Marsh took her dance partner Graziano Di Prima to visit her workplace and show off some moves for some of the cast.

Kym will play dinner lady Nicky Walters, whose children Preston and Tonya are also pupils at the school.

The news that the school drama was returning to our screens was announced earlier this year along with exciting news about who would be joining the cast.

Angela Griffin will reprise her role as Kim Campbell, but the former school counsellor is now the head teacher. She said, ‘I feel really honoured to be joining the new series of Waterloo Road.

[It is exciting to be stepping back into Kim’s shoes and I can’t wait to explore her life, character and how she has evolved since we last met her. The writers have some amazing storylines planned and I’m looking forward to welcoming viewers back to Waterloo Road.’

Other returnees are Adam Thomas and Katie Griffiths, who played Donte Charles and Chlo Grainger in the very first series back in 2006. Donte and Chlo are now married and ready to come back to the school where they met to work on the staff team.

Adam, who also played Adam Barton in Emmerdale, says, ‘Waterloo Road was a huge part of my life and career so to go back 15 years later is a dream come true.’

The new series was originally expected this year and it’s been a frustrating wait – but finally it looks like we may not have too long before we’re hearing that theme tune on our TV screens again. As one of the comments on the Instagram post puts it, ‘AHHH THE MUSIC BRINGS BACK SO MANY MEMORIES.’
