The video shows the black bear in the apartment trying to sniff out some food.

It quickly loses interest in something near the couch and decides to head to the kitchen.

The bear then crouches down and rifles through Sumner’s pantry where it has its eye on a range of salty snacks.

Eventually it ended up settling on peanuts and chips and failed to get into the fridge.

A maintenance worker at the apartment said the bear was later seen resting on a bed.

‘[It] got into the pantry and ate chips and peanuts. Did not get into the fridge,’ Sumner told local television station KCRA.

He added that there was ‘minimal damage’, but it was still scary.

A Department of Fire and Wildlife spokesman said California only has black bears and they come in a variety of colors including black, brown, blonde and cinnamon.

Bear sightings are said to be more common as the summer months heat up as people spend more time outdoors.

The National Park Service advises keeping distance from bears, avoiding sudden movements that could startle an animal, or hiding and spooking it.

‘Pay attention to your surroundings and make a special effort to be noticeable if you are in an area with known bear activity or a good food source, such as berry bushes.’

Bear attacks are rare. Most will only attack if they feel threatened, to defend their cubs or to protect food.
