Homeowner posts notice threatening £25k fines for cold callers

No strangers welcome: Homeowner erects huge wooden fence around house to block cold callers and posts letter threatening £25k fines for anyone who knocks unannounced

A Bristol homeowner has installed a tall wooden fence outside their home to block cold callers and warns anyone who knocks unannounced will face a £25,000 fine.

The elaborate notice, placed in front of a regular terraced home in the Bedminster suburb of the city, also appears to ban people putting junk mail through the letterbox.

The sign warns any passing charity fundraiser, political canvasser, delivery driver or stricken neighbour that there will be consequences for stepping into the small front porch and knocking on the door.

The sign reads: ‘To all persons corporations councils and agents thereof. Vehicles manned or remotely operated’ before outlining the ‘fee schedule’ should anyone trespass.

‘Minimum penalty £25,000 or 1,500 Troy ounces of British silver coins. Per person or per vehicle per offence including vehicles either manned or remotely operated.’

At present 1,500 Troy ounces of silver is the equivalent to £27,360.

The resident then quotes the case law that backs up their right to charge trespass penalties – all of which appear to be from New South Wales in Australia.

The notice ends with: ‘This means you are bound and agree to this contract by entering uninvited, whether you think so or not – applies to you whether you think so or not. ID to be surrendered for inspection.’

A black post box is installed beneath the sign for ‘legitimate mail’.

Bristol City Council has been approached for comment.
