A Canadian who moved to London has shared some ‘crazy’ differences she noticed about living in the UK.
The TikToker @callmahal’s list ranges from the ‘cool’ to the inconvenient, to the downright annoying things she noticed in four years of living in the capital.
Her video has amassed over half-a-million views and more than 30,000 likes since being posted in mid-September.
She began with her ‘house edition’ of differences between North America and the UK, with the lack of plug sockets in British bathrooms.
‘But it does make sense,’ she explained, ‘because the UK has double the voltage of North American outlets.’

While this could be something many might find annoying, Mahal did not seem too bothered by the surprise.
One of the more seemingly ‘out of place’ elements of UK life which the TikToker picked up on was laundry facilities often being found in the kitchen.
‘The washing machine is always by the sink,’ she observed, but she also noted that ‘dryers are not a thing, and even if they are, the majority of houses don’t have them.’
Mahal panned to a clothes horse in her sunlit garden, and then a washing line next door.
‘Everyone buys these drying racks to hang their clothes, and it does feel old-timey to me.’
Many comments took issue with this point, with one saying: ‘We do have dryers? You just have to have a big enough house to have it or have a house with a utility room.’
Another noted that the aversion to dryers is a good way to save money, especially in the summer.

Mahal’s fourth difference was that plug sockets in the UK have on-off switches, as opposed to US and Canadian – as well as many other countries – which lack them.
This was clearly the expat’s favourite surprise feature of her London home as she admitted she found it ‘kind of cool’.
She briefly pointed out that windows in the UK rarely have wire screens to keep out flying insects, before moving on to her real gripe of the video for the finale.
‘The last thing, and this drives me crazy in the summer,’ Mahal said, ‘is the fact that there’s no AC [air conditioning].’
More than the dryer comment, this final comment seemed to touch a nerve with many viewers.
One gave a solution: ‘AC? Open the window.’
Another asked: ‘No AC?? Exactly how hot does it get in the UK? I thought it was cold and rainy all year.’
And someone else said emphatically that ‘we don’t need ACs because it never gets hot,’ followed by a crying emoji.
Mahal admitted that the lack of aircon being down to the generally cool weather ‘does make sense’.
