Will the weather put a dampener on celebrations?
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Sydneysiders should be able to put their umbrellas away in time for the fireworks this evening.
Conditions in the CBD are expected to be mild and dry this evening, but there is a risk of a thunderstorm tonight in Western Sydney.
It’s a similar story in Melbourne, with clear conditions in the west and possible thunderstorms in the city’s east, but the Bureau said the rain was expected to clear for the main celebrations.
Some parts of eastern and central Victoria might get wet, mainly during the afternoon and early evening.
Waiting for Sydney’s fireworks? Here’s what to know about them
Sydney’s famous fireworks are returning to the harbour this year, and so are about one fifth of the city’s population.
Whether you’re joining that party, or watching through a screen, here’s what to know if you’re planning to watch them.
For those staying home, or tuning in virtually across the world, the fireworks will be livestreamed at 9pm AEDT and at midnight on the City of Sydney website, along with ABC TV’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
ABC and iview will begin broadcasting the New Year’s event a little earlier from 8.30pm.
Radio coverage of the event will be from 6pm to 12.30pm, and an exclusive soundtrack synched to the fireworks will play at 9pm and at midnight on KIIS 1065.
Welcome to our live coverage of NYE
Happy New Year’s Eve from the newsroom! Thanks for joining me today.
I’m Millie Muroi, and I’ll be anchoring our final live blog coverage for the year.
Before we settle in for the fireworks, here’s what’s been happening today:
- A rain-free New Year’s Eve beckons for those watching the fireworks on Sydney Harbour.
- Crowds are building along the harbour at key vantage points, with up to one million people expected to descend on the city.
- In Victoria, overwhelmed lifesavers temporarily closed a popular beach as they carried out five rescues.
- About 450,000 people are expected to hit Melbourne’s CBD for the fireworks displays this evening.
We’ll be taking you through all the action from across Sydney and Melbourne, with our roving team of journalists and photographers bringing us all the news from the ground.
Stay tuned for updates, reflections on the year’s events and all the news as we count down to midnight.
