Footballer Jesse Lingard has revealed he is aiming to become an actor and star in comedy films after finishing on the pitch.

The former England and Manchester United player, now with Nottingham Forest, has set his sights on becoming a big name on screen – saying he ‘just wants to be happy’.

It comes after the star recently revealed he regularly turned to drink ‘to take the pain away’ when abuse from Manchester United fans and his mother’s battle with depression became too much to bear.

On his new dream, Lingard, 30, said: ‘After football I want to go into acting. Maybe start doing a little bit of voiceover work, animation kind of things.

‘But I need to take drama classes – I’ve not done that yet.

‘I just love films. I’ve always been a big film lover. And to be involved in a film or a series would be amazing.

‘I need to really home in on the drama side of things – I’m really bad with lines to be honest. I think I’ll start in comedy first.’

The star added: ‘And then when you see the Interstellars and Inceptions – them kind of roles. But that’s going to take time. You’re not going to be (cast) straight way – maybe a bit part.

Lingard is widely known for his interests in social media, which he approached the club about. He said he will need to take drama classes before becoming an actor

‘With a media company I’ve got so many things in the line-up, and obviously it’s based in LA, and that’s hopefully where eventually hopefully I want to finish football.’

He told the Diary of a CEO podcast: ‘I just want to be happy and do things that I want to do, to make me happy.’

Lingard first made the revelation of his new dream in August last year, according to The Sun.

It comes as the athlete recently hit out at former club Manchester United, labelling it as ‘behind’ other elite Premier League clubs.

He unleashed on the Red Devils, claiming they are stuck in the past and have lacked any control since Sir Alex Ferguson departed.

Lingard told The Diary of a CEO Podcast that United briefed the press against him after a loan deal to Newcastle collapsed last January.

He claimed the deal ‘was done’ until United’s Director of Football John Murtough phoned and said he would be no longer leaving, before asking if his motivation to depart was to have ‘days off.’

It comes as the star also revealed he ‘was drinking to try to take the pain away’ as his Manchester United career fell apart and he battled mental demons.

He opened up on how the pressure to perform, abuse from fans, and his mother’s struggle with depression totally drained his enthusiasm for the game during the 2019-20 season.

‘I was drinking before bed, having a nightcap. I look back now and think ‘what was I doing that for?

‘But I needed something to try and take the pain away,’ Lingard told The Diary Of A CEO podcast in the candid interview.
