Breaking the cycle of crime is child’s play for police officer who commandeers schoolboy’s tiny bike in hilarious video to chase suspected burglar through city before arresting him

This is the hilarious moment a police officer chases a suspected burglar through town on a child’s bicycle after she commandeered it from a ‘stunned’ young boy.

PC Harriett Taylor was chasing a 47 year old suspected burglar through the town centre when she approached the boy and asked if she could use his bike.

The police said the ‘slightly stunned’ boy – named Jake – ‘came to our rescue’ and allowed the police officer to borrow his blue bike.

After the man – who was wanted for theft, burglary and shoplifting – was captured and taken into custody, PC Taylor returned the bike to the owner and posed for a picture with him in Portsmouth, Hampshire.

A Gosport Police spokesperson said: ‘If you thought you spotted PC Taylor riding a child’s bike in the town centre earlier this evening, we can confirm that your eyes weren’t deceiving you.

‘She was indeed riding a child’s bike in the town centre earlier this evening!

The police said the ‘slightly stunned’ boy – named Jake (pictured with PC Harriett Taylor)  – ‘came to our rescue’ and allowed the police officer to borrow his blue bike

‘It was a bicycle she’d just borrowed from a little boy in the White Lion Walk area, and one which was needed during the search for a wanted Gosport man.

‘Knowing she needed some pedal power to assist in the capture of the 47-year-old suspect, PC Taylor approached the lad and had the following very brief conversation with him.’

The video shows the officer grinning at the camera as she stands on the pedals and dashes through a gap next to a building site.

The laughing person behind the camera chases after her as she pedals in hot pursuit of the suspect.

Describing the conversation between the officer and the boy, the spokesperson continued: ‘PC Taylor: ‘Please can I borrow your bike? I will return it to you.’

‘A Slightly Stunned Boy: ‘Erm… yeah, okay then.’

‘Thank you so much for the generous loan of your bike, young man. You, and your bike, were a great help to us.

‘The man was eventually caught up with and arrested on suspicion of theft, burglary and shoplifting. He’s currently in police custody. It was a truly brilliant joint effort from everyone involved.’

Kate Gerrie joked that she hoped the officer had commandeered the little bike using her warrant card

Posting alongside a picture of Jake and the police officer, the force said: ‘Pictured is PC Taylor, alongside the little hero who yesterday came to our rescue! Thanks again young man! Just let us know if you ever want to borrow one of our police cars!’

People online posted in support of the young boy and officer, with Jacky Clements commenting: ‘Excuse me young man, I need to commandeer your vehicle to participate in a high-speed police chase to apprehend a criminal of the law – fabulous.

‘I bet he thought he was in a scene from the Sweeney. Cheers all round. Firstly for taking another low life off the streets and secondly for giving that youngster huge street cred. He’ll be elaborating on the story for weeks in the playground.’

Brenda Wynn added: ‘Pedal power win the days!! Good result, well done.’

A third – Kate Gerrie – joked: ‘Love it, I hope you flashed your warrant card whilst commandeering it too.

‘Well done to the lad who allowed you to borrow it.’
