Prince Harry made Queen laugh with joke about going bald in last conversation

Prince Harry said he and Queen Elizabeth II joked about his balding in the final conversation they ever had.

In his memoir Spare, released today (January 10), the Duke of Sussex recalled that he spent the flight to Balmoral on the day of his grandma's death remembering their last phone call.

During the chat, Harry said the pair "touched on many topics", including the sorry state of the Prince's hair.

"I spent much of the flight staring at the clouds, replaying the last time I’d spoken with Granny," Harry recounted.

  • "We’d touched on many topics. Her health, of course. The turmoil at Number 10. The Braemar Games – she was sorry about not being well enough to attend.

"We talked also about the biblical drought. The lawn at Frogmore, where Meg and I were staying, was in terrible shape. 'Looks like the top of my head, Granny! Balding and brown in patches.'

    "She laughed.

"I told her to take care, I looked forward to seeing her soon."

But Harry added that the day his grandmother died back in September 2022 didn't just consist of happy memories.

The Duke recalled how King Charles III specifically barred Meghan Markle from going to Balmoral, and that he received radio silence when he asked his brother, Prince William, if he was making the journey to the Scottish residence.

"I immediately texted Willy to ask whether he and Kate [Middleton] were flying up. If so, when? And how?

"No response. Meg and I looked at flight options […] we couldn't delay a decision any longer," he recalled.

"Then came another call from Pa.

"He said I was welcome at Balmoral, but he didn’t want… her. He started to lay out his reason, which was nonsensical, and disrespectful, and I wasn’t having it. 'Don’t ever speak about my wife that way.'

"He stammered, apologetic, saying he simply didn’t want a lot of people around. No other wives were coming, Kate wasn’t coming he said, therefore Meg shouldn’t.

'"Then that’s all you needed to say,'" the Prince recalled.

Harry's tell-all autobiography, Spare, has just landed on UK shelves – but the book ruffled feathers even before its official release date after copies were accidentally released early in Spain.

The Duke of Sussex also sat down for a number of tell-all interviews prior to the memoir's official release, which saw him reiterate claims aimed at his older brother.

One of the book's more shocking allegations says William got physical during a row over Meghan in 2019, which was described in detail during ITV's Harry: The Interview.

Harry wrote: "It all happened so fast. So very fast."

"He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace and he knocked me to the floor."

"I landed on the dog’s bowl which cracked under my back. The pieces cutting into me.

"I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out."

The interview, hosted by Tom Bradby, saw Harry stress that while tensions still ran high, he was keen for an eventual reconciliation with his royal relatives.

"Though I would like to have reconciliation, I would like accountability," he said.

"I’ve managed to make peace over this time with a lot of things that have happened. But that doesn’t mean that I’m just gonna let it go."
