Seven signs that gave away sick killer who murdered Megan Newborough by slitting her throat before dumping body | The Sun

MEGAN Newborough was murdered by a "highly conditioned sexual sadist" boyfriend who "has the potential to kill again", an ex-detective has claimed.

Evil Ross McCullam strangled the HR advisor in his parents' living room in Coalville, Leicestershire, before slashing her throat 14 times to "make sure she was dead".

At his trial, McCullam laughed as he recalled the depraved killing which saw him dump his girlfriend's half-naked body before launching a cover up mission and going on a booze bender.

But seven key signs give away the sick killer who snuffed out the 23-year-old's life, according to ex-Madeleine McCann detective Dr Graham Hill.

Speaking to The Sun Online, the expert on child abduction warned thousands of violent texts, porn use and how he killed Megan offer tell tale signs McCullam was a born-killer.

Twisted activity after, including Googling serial killers, going out for drinks, fake texts and laughing in court were also key giveaways.

Dr Hill warned that over 3,500 WhatsApp texts McCullum bombarded Megan with in just over a month of their "sort of relationship" is "extreme by anyone's standards".

The ex-superintendent noted the rapid graduation from innocent to extreme is how sex offenders "confuse sex and violence".

The texts "should have been a warning sign", the former Surrey Police cop said.

During his trial at Leicester Crown Court, McCullam claimed his porn use was a "safety blanket" that "makes you feel better for a short period of time".

Analysing the depraved claim, Dr Hill said: "He would have been running highly violent fantasies for a long time, and masturbating to them.

"Offenders like this guy become conditioned to see women in a different way."

This was conveyed in how the evil 30-year-old killed Megan, from Nuneaton, by strangling her, a method linked to "intimacy, power and control".

Megan had gone round to McCullam's parents' home after work on August, 6, 2021 – he claims he went into a "volcano rage" following oral sex and then killed her.

Speaking of the murder, Dr Hill added: "The fact that he then slashes her neck fourteen times with a carving knife from the kitchen suggests a frenzied rage."

McCullam, who met Megan six-weeks prior at Ibstock Brick Factory, where they both worked, then frantically Googled serial killers and porn.

This suggests the murder was "not premeditated" but instead a desperate attempt to see what other killers did after their crimes to learn how to "cover his tracks".

He bundled Megan's body into her own Citroen C3 and drove to Charley Road, near Woodhouse Eaves, where he dumped her in secluded undergrowth behind a stone wall.

Chilling CCTV footage show McCullam abandoning her motor in a car park in Loughborough before changing then binning his clothes and hailing a taxi home.

Megan's family later reported her missing at midday on August 7.

The killer then sent staged texts and a voicemail to Megan's phone which had been hurled into undergrowth when he disposed of her body.

One message read "You are f****** amazing”, followed by a smiley face and three kisses.

The voicemail, recorded around 11.30pm and played to the jury, said: "Hey up babe, it's Ross. Just worried about you. You haven't rang back or, you know, text me or anything.

"It's probably nothing… Probably fell asleep. I am just worried that's all. I had a fun time earlier. Anyway I will see you tomorrow. Love you… ooh… I didn't say that. Oh ****."

Analysing why McCullam did this and then went out for drinks, Dr Hill explained: "It is a very common thing to carry on as normal after they have committed a crime like this."

Megan was found in the early hours of August 8 after police used GPS to track her phone, McCullam was later arrested.

Chilling footage of the discovery and of police ringing up McCullam were shared by Leicestershire police.

Cops scoured his house after discovering evidence the lab technician had fought for her life, including her Fitbit watch ripped from her wrist and found on the living room floor.

There was also evidence that he had cleaned up bloodstains on the carpet at the Windsor Close address – telling his parents a damp patch was caused by a spilled cup of coffee.

At Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday McCullam showed no remorse and laughed as he recalled the brutal murder of his girlfriend.

"All of that suggests a lack of empathy, a lack of remorse – all of that you see with sexual sadists", the ex-cop warned.

He added how the killer's attempts to blame the killing on a "volcano rage" and being abused as a child was a failed effort to convince the jury he is a victim.

And it was McCallum also attempting to "rationalise" why he killed his 23-year-old girlfriend – a blatant giveaway of an evil killer.

In a statement, released by Leicestershire Police, Megan's family said she "shone like a star to everyone she came into contact with" and loved dancing and teaching kids.

They added: "She left home that night in a very happy mood. The thought of what happened to her just hours later – and the evil facing her – is something we can't escape."

McCullam was found guilty of murder and is due to be sentenced before the same court on Friday December 16.
