However, investigators discovered several red flags when they got to the scene.

Mary was cold to the touch which was unusual given the time Colin had said she had died, and a nurse had spotted scratch marks on Colin's chest.

Detective Inspector, Patrick Marry, worked on Mary's murder case, and he remarked that “things didn’t add up, they didn’t sit well”.

After the Postmortem was done on Mary's body it became clear that she had been murdered.

Eventually, Detective Marry worked out that Colin had strangled his wife to death.

At the trial, Colin pled guilty and admitted he was a "coward".

He said, "I take full responsibility for Mary's death."

The killer apologised to Mary's mum: "I apologise for taking your daughter, friend, and soulmate so unnecessarily."

It later emerged that Colin had been plotting his murder for over a year and a half.

The killer had been researching other killers to learn from their methods.

It was also revealed that Colin had taken out a life insurance policy with Irish Life that meant he would get £500,000 if his wife died within their first 10 years of marriage.

Where is Colin Whelan now?

Colin is serving his life sentence in North Dublin, Ireland.
