Wood chipper horror incident sees man dragged to death through machine’s jaws

A tree surgeon has tragically been killed by his own heavy-duty wood chip machine.

The victim, who remains unidentified to the public, was working at a property in Menlo Park, near San Francisco, US, on Tuesday when he fatally fell before 1pm.

Police say they were called to the 900 block of Peggy Lane where they found a man's body clearly injured from his wood chipper.

A statement from the authorities reads: “When police units arrived on scene, a male subject was found deceased from injuries sustained from the incident.”

According to agency officials, the worker was an employee of Californian S.P. McClenahan, a branch of Bartlett Tree Expert.

Neighbour Lisa Mitchell told KGO that the company were regulars on the road and the accident has had a devastating impact on the local community.

Lisa said: “We all feel sick and sad. We’re really sad. We’re trying to imagine what the poor family and their fellow workers are feeling. And it’s just, it’s a lot. We just feel terrible.

“We see a lot of their trucks. So, I can only imagine what they’re feeling, because I’m sure they treat their employees like family and it’s just, it’s awful."

Images from the scene show emergency service staff and inspectors gathering around the wood chipper.

The California division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) has been tasked with investigating the tragedy phoned in at 12.53pm, KNTV reports.

Thanh Skinner who also lives on the road said the sudden convoy of police and firefighter vehicles followed by TV cameras, was a big shock to the typically quiet area.

“It’s generally very peaceful, quiet, you don’t really see any activity," Thanh said.

“So, when I came home around 2.30pm., the street was completely blocked off. And so we thought maybe something had happened to one of our neighbours.”
