EastEnders icon looks barely recognisable ahead of debut TV role decades ago

EastEnders: Cindy returns to Albert Square

EastEnders’ Cindy Beale (played by Michelle Collins) has finally returned to the Square after “dying” more than two decades ago.

Long-term fans of the BBC soap might remember Michelle making her original debut as troublemaker Cindy back in 1988.

Cindy was on and off the soap for a few years, but made her seemingly final departure in 1998 when the character “died” in prison.

Earlier this year though, it was revealed Cindy is in fact alive and has been in witness protection ever since her “death”.

While fans get to grips with Cindy’s complicated backstory, a throwback photo of actress Michelle has surfaced, and it’s safe to say the soap star looks unrecognisable.

Michelle has returned to the soap at 61 and remains as iconic as ever, with other classic characters immediately recognising Cindy has somehow risen from the dead.

A photo snapped in 1987 though shows a very young Michelle at the start of her successful career.

Sporting a short, bleach-blonde hairdo and large black hooped earrings, fans would be forgiven for not instantly spotting the resemblance to the EastEnders legend.

Michelle would have been around 25 years of age around the time of the picture and looks worlds away from her troubled EastEnders alterego.

Cindy rocked the Square when she did arrive, not long after the photo was taken, making Ian Beale’s (Adam Woodyatt) life more difficult during her time in Walford.

However, he seems to have forgiven her since realising she is in fact alive, and the former couple reunited in France.

Cindy was desperate to get back to Walford now that it’s finally deemed safe for her to do so, but Ian has been putting her off.

Tonight’s episode saw the dramatic fallout as she stepped foot back in her old home and unexpectedly came face-to-face with her ex-husband George Knight (Colin Salmon), who she abandoned nine years ago along with their two daughters in order to shield them from risks she posed by leading her double life.

Now that she is well and truly back on the Square, how will she manage to fix the mess she has created?

EastEnders continues on Wednesday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
